With less than a month left of summer, it is a great time to start encouraging your child to read often again, if you’ve even stopped at all. There is so much research to support continued reading all year long, and we see the benefits as parents and teachers. One main way you can accomplish this is reading before bed. It is a great addition to any bedtime routine as it is calming, a wonderful bonding experience, and reinforces the idea that you value literacy. We suggest you continue to share this experience with your child long after they can read on their own. You can have your child read to you, take turns reading pages, or simply continue to read to your child aloud. All of these share the same benefits as reading to young children who cannot yet read on their own.
A parent shared with us a great set of links with classic bedtime stories, as well as many other book ideas, if you are stuck in a reading rut and want to expand your child’s options. You can find that link here.
